We have been learning how to divide in P2 although we have been calling it 'sharing' or putting items into groups. However some children have learned how to use the divide symbol and have been writing their own sums. Some children even know that if there is anything left over, it is called a 'remainder'. Here are P2 playing some games and solving division sums.

Materials
Primary 2 have been writing science reports. Last week we wrote about jelly changing from a solid to a liquid and then back again using heat. This week we wanted to find out if our bottle of juice had gas in it. Gas is difficult to work with because we can't often see it. We came up with an experiment to prove that there was gas in the bottle.
We also studied how water could change from a solid (ice), to a gas (condensation) then into a liquid (back into water - like rain). While waiting for the ice to change the children had a challenge to sort out lots of cards into solids, liquids and gases.
Primary 2 have enjoyed using different materials to make things. They have drawn out plans, gathered materials and had to solve design problems. Here are a few examples; we had camper vans, robots, cats and ice cream trucks!

End of week fun!
Today Primary 2 had lots of fun. We did science experiments with jelly on Thursday and then we got to eat it on Friday. We have been working on changing states and the children noticed that when you add boiling hot water to solid jelly cubes, they become a liquid. Then when you make them cold again, it turns back into a solid!
The children have all been very scientific and written reports on what they have observed.
We have also celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite book characters and sharing some of our best loved stories.

Materials topic
Primary 2 have started their new science topic of 'materials'. We will be learning about the properties of different materials (are they strong, waterproof, flexible, transparent? etc) and finding out how materials can change with different temperatures.
So far we have learned about what things are made of and we can group them into solids, liquids and gases. Some materials can change from one to the other.
We made liquid water and paint become solid ice last week and had lots of fun making pictures with them (until they melted!)

Today Primary 2 worked in groups and had to use lots of skills; good team work, creativity, design ideas and budgeting! They had a challenge to build a 'boat' for a little character but could only use materials I would sell them. We will be testing the boats tomorrow.

Mid-term break
Wow, we are at the mid-term break already! Despite having a short week, Primary 2 have been super busy and squeezed in lots of activities.
We have been rounding off our Night Sky topic by having a space themed afternoon on Wednesday. We ate astronaut food (freeze dried strawberries and mint choc chip ice cream), made space play dough (black play dough with lots of glitter) and cloud dough. Cloud dough is reason many of the children went home looking like Smurfs! We had not anticipated that much blue food colouring!
Our theme in R.M.E has been friendship and we have talked about times it is easy or hard to achieve this. We made a 'friendship web' in class when children passed the ball of wool saying "It is easy to show friendship to you because...."
This was a lovely activity where children gave some really kind and thoughtful answers. Everyone was smiling at the end after receiving such nice compliments.

Update on Term 3 so far
Primary 2 have been enjoying out new Health and Well being work. It is called 'Jigsaw'. This term has focused on working hard to achieve Dreams and Goals. There has been a big focus on perseverance when work is challenging and working well with other people. Here are some work we have completed so far.
The class have been very enthusiastic about our most recent project: Day and Night and The Night Sky. Children have been sharing what they have found out at home and from reading our non fiction books in class. We are looking forward to our assembly on Friday 10th February to show everyone some of what we've learned.
We have had quite a few exciting Show & Tells recently. Here are some 'visitors' that have excited Primary 2.
